Live Edge and Innovative 'Green' Cabinetry
Details and Options
All of the wood in DG products is reclaimed (from barns), urban salvaged (cut by city tree companies), or FSC certified/formaldehyde-free, and our finishes are low VOC, or totally natural wherever practical. Let your conscience be free and feel safe with Dancing Grains' products.
We Ship Nationwide
Wood- The wild contrast between the light sapwood and dark heartwood in walnut makes it a great choice for these live edge cabinets, but there are many options. Many other woods have a lighter heartwood grain and therefore don’t have the same contrast. We can use these woods (like maple, beetle kill pine, oak, etc.) to achieve a more subdued tone.
Bark, Bare, Sculpted, or Sleek- Although the bark that does go on these cabinets is chosen for its sturdiness and is drench-sealed to harden and protect it, you may still want your cabinets without it lining the edges. It can be removed revealing a cleaner-looking, smooth live edge.
For more clean lines, we do simple and sophisticated shapes without live edges. Elegance comes from well-matched wood choices, playful grain patterns, and the simple lines.
The most enthrawling of our line of cabinets is our sculpted type. Doors, face frames, and door faces are sculpted with flowing lines, interesting details, and amazing grain work. The quality is as good as it comes. These are the premier cabinets.
Wild or Mild?- Since trees have endless shapes, your cabinets can be ordered with very wild or fairly straight door edges. At their wildest, the doors are well-curved to parallel at the meeting edges and will hang very artistically in your space. Although the live edge is what makes these cabinets stand out so much, we can cut a straight edge on the outside of the door faces, still leaving some sapwood for contrast.
Panels- Choose any type of panels to fit your setting. Options include hand-pounded metals, clear glass, stained glass, painted and distressed, natural wood, or is there something else you have in mind?
Hardware- There are a few different styles of hinges and slides to choose from. Add specialty drawers and storage units in your cabinets, like "lazy Susans," sliding pantry shelves, trash can drawers, bread boxes, a tilting cleaning utensil holder, and more. The type and quality of the closing mechanisms varies by selection. Choose from rolling track guides, ball-bearing guides, and self-closing types. Choose just about any type of handles and pulls you can find. We can help select something that will go well.
Cabinet Interiors- Materials used for the interiors of your cabinets should be chosen based on your needs. Choose from solid wood, veneered plywood, or melamine plywood. Solid wood holds the best depth of wood grain and is refinishable many times. It's the old tradition in cabinetry, and requires much more work, therefore the cost is higher. Veneered plywoods look nice, are more economical than solid wood, but are not as durable to wear or as refinishable. Melamine has a plastic veneer that makes it best suited for economic designs that are very water resistant. This is the current market standard.
Already have good cabinets and just want the new doors? Choose to order doors that will look well with the existing face frames on your cabinets or have the face frames refinished to match the new doors. In some cases we may even be able to replace the face frames. Depending on the way the cabinets were constructed, though, it may not always be possible to replace the face frames. You will be given the options and advised on the best ones during an onsite consultation.
Design and Pricing
Because of the variable nature of kitchen, bathroom, and built-in designs, we do not produce stock-sized cabinets. They are all figured specifically for your layout and priced accordingly.
When you are quoted, you’ll be able to see the costs of the options you have chosen. The complexity and volume of the design, types of wood you choose, panel material, types and amounts of hardware, crown molding, and other design details affect the total price. This list does not account for all of the variables in pricing, but is meant to help you understand some of the bigger factors.
In order to produce an accurate quote, we need a layout of the cabinet design. For local customers, we will come to measure your layout and discuss your preferences. For orders to be shipped, we will hire someone in your area to measure your layout. Please allow one week to receive a quote, although we're pretty quick.
The cost of installation is calculated based on the complexity of the project, development of current layout/construction phase, and other critical factors. In most cases, with live-edge and other simple cabinet designs, installation will be ten percent of the total cost of the cabinets. Extras (ex: crown molding, etc.) may be calculated in addition to the basic installation fee. We do not require that you have Dancing Grains install the cabinets, but we cannot guarantee the results of the installation or the product (if damaged) if you choose to have another contractor install them or to do it yourself.
Building with live edge wood is a highly customized and artistic process, and because of that, no two finished products will be the same. But, please expect to receive a top quality product. We are committed to providing a well-thought out and executed product, functionally and artistically serving you for many years.
